Editorial standards
How we decide what to publish, how articles are written and checked, and how we fix mistakes.
Sources
Every article lists its sources at the bottom. We group sources in three tiers:
- Tier 1, official sources: government documents and announcements (the Federal Register, ATF, DOJ, FBI, courts, state legislatures and agencies) and a manufacturer's own announcement of its product or recall. These carry an "Official source" badge.
- Tier 2, established news and industry outlets.
- Tier 3, other secondary sources such as social posts and newsletters.
Links in an article point only to pages we actually collected. Government text may be quoted, in quotation marks and with attribution. We do not copy the writing of other outlets.
AI writing and automatic fact-checking
Articles are written by an AI model from the source documents. Before an article is published, a second, independent AI check compares each factual claim with the source texts and marks it supported, unsupported or overstated. An article with any failing claim is rewritten once; if it fails again it is held for a human editor and is not published automatically. Code also enforces rules the model cannot override: every claim must cite a source, every link must come from a source, and nothing is stated as fact on the word of third parties alone.
Every article carries this note: "This article was written with AI from the sources listed below and checked against them automatically. Report an error: corrections@dailygunnews.com."
Unconfirmed reports
When only other outlets report something and no primary source is available yet, we may publish an Unconfirmed report. It is labelled at the top: "Reported by (outlet). Daily Gun News has not independently confirmed this." When an official source appears, the article is updated and the label is removed.
Updates
Stories develop. When new information arrives we update the article at the same address and add a dated update note.
Corrections
If we get a fact wrong, we fix it and add a dated correction note to the article explaining what changed. All corrections are listed on our corrections page. If an article should not have been published at all, we unpublish it; its address then returns a "removed" page. Report an error to corrections@dailygunnews.com.
No legal advice
Daily Gun News reports on laws, rules and court cases. It is information, not legal advice. Laws differ by state and change often; for your situation, talk to a qualified attorney or the agency involved.
Independence
We have no ownership, partnership or financial ties to any firearms manufacturer, retailer, distributor or advocacy group. Deal links in "Around the web" come from a public deals feed, are marked as sponsored outbound links, and have no effect on coverage. If we ever run advertising it will be clearly labelled and kept apart from the news.
What we do not publish
Opinion and commentary, crime stories, speculation about private individuals, and details about victims of crime.
